The Platypus: An Unusual Egg-Laying Mammal
The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), sometimes referred to as the duck-billed platypus, is a small egg laying mammal.
The platypus is one of the few mammals that does not have a stomach. In most animals, the stomach uses strong acids and enzymes to break down food. However, in the platypus, the esophagus connects directly to the intestines.
These mammals are called monotremes because they have a common rear opening, the cloaca. Through this opening faeces and urine are voided (put out), and sexual activity takes place.
